See Stuart Little/Stuart Little 2: Deluxe Edition Boxed Set Online Right Now!

This live-action version of E.B. White’s novel doesn’t have quite the magic of, say, Toy Story. Instead of entertainment the whole family can be enthralled with, Stuart Little is squarely aimed, and successfully so, at the 4- to 10-year-old watcher. Does this make it a bad family film? Not in the slightest. The gee-whiz visual effects (created by original Star Wars wizard John Dykstra) and the film’s ebullient wholesomeness make this a welcome addition to the home library.

In E.B. White’s world, it’s hardly surprising that human parents would adopt “outside their species.” The smooth-talking mouse Stuart (voiced by Michael J. Fox) seems the perfect new child for parents Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie, especially with an adorable wardrobe of very small sweaters and pants. Harder is fitting in with the Little’s family cat, Snowbell (voiced by Nathan Lane, who also deftly voiced Timon in director Rob Minkoff’s last feature, The Lion King). The simple story deals with Stuart trying to fit in with his new life, including big brother George (Jerry Maguire’s scene-stealing Jonathan Lipnicki). And of course there’s an adventure when Snowbell’s schemes lead Stuart into tru danger, in the form of the devious plans of an alley cat named Smokey (voiced by Chazz Palminteri). Brisk–85 minutes–amusing, and tolerably cute, Stuart Little stands tall. Two curios: The effects are so cleanly done that we could call Stuart the first successfully computer-animated actor, and the screenplay was cowritten by M. Night Shyamalan, who made bigger waves in 1999 writing and directing The Sixth Sense. –Doug Thomas

Gaining popularity in Europe and their native Canada, Barrage: The World on Stage showcases the versatile musical talents of eight young violinists, two guitarists/mandolin/bass players, and one drummer/percussionist. “The basic principle behind Barrage was to take as many different styles from around the world as we could get and kind of amalgamate them,” says one troupe member. Created by Dean Marshall, who writes and arranges the group’s songs, the music touches on Celtic, East Indian, big band swing, and American folk. This concert video, which also intersperses comments from the members, was filmed in Calgary in December 1999.

Barrage is the latest entry in the multi-theatrical Stomp/Blast craze. Using violins as the binding element is daring and somewhat inspired, and the music is well-performed and very enjoyable to listen to, though Barrage doesn’t always hit the heights it aspires to. Like fellow Canadians Leahy (the Celtic-focused family), Barrage members both fiddle and dance, but as singers and dancers, Barrage are excellent fiddle players. Barrage: The World on Stage has a lively charm, and as you find yourself tapping along to their enthusiastic performance, you can see why they are favorite performers at Epcot Center (where Barrage is billed as “The World’s Hottest Fiddle Group”). HBO tackles the subject head-on with a trilogy of shorts, and, regardless of your opinion on the topic, If These Walls Could Talk is a bold and provocative examination of how the laws and attitudes about abortion in the United States have both changed drastically and remained so much the same.

Three women, three time periods, one house: each finds herself in trouble and must face the overwhelming decision about what to do with the unwanted pregnancy. The first segment is the most powerful, featuring Demi Moore as a young, recently widowed nurse in 1952. With no one to turn to and limited financial means, her options are few. Catherine Keener costars as her harshly judgmental sister-in-law. The next piece occurs in 1974, as Sissy Spacek, a mother of four who is trying to earn a college degree, discovers she’s pregnant with her fifth child. Her utterly modern feminist daughter encourages Spacek to get a newly legal abortion, but it’s a complex decision. In the final segment, college student Anne Heche becomes pregnant by her married professor. Her best friend, played by Jada Pinkett, is resolutely against abortion and the two wrangle over right and wrong. As the young woman tries to learn about her options, she finds herself enmeshed in the pro-life demonstrations outside the abortion clinic. Cher, who directs this segment (the other two are directed by Nancy Savoca), costars as a doctor at the clinic.

While trying to be evenhanded and demonstrating the different choices different women make, the film does have a decidedly pro-choice leaning. Yet the power of the movie is undeniable and it raises significant qustions on both sides of the abortion debate, making it an important film for women (and men) everywhere to watch and talk about. –Jenny Brown

Doris is a widowed mom whose Maine lobster business is snarled by railroad tycoon Ernie Kovacs (hiding behind a skullcap and a huge cigar), the “meanest man in America.” Her lawsuit against him, aided by lawyer-suitor Lemmon, gains national headlines. This is a curious movie: crucial scenes seem to have been left unwritten, while sequnces involving Cub Scouts and an oddly impassioned Town Hall Meeting go on endlessly. Director Richard Quine was making some fun movies around this time (Bell, Book, and Candle), but the fizz is only intermittent here, mostly provided by Lemmon’s jack-in-the-box youthfulness. Doris sings a couple of tunes and brings her downhome tomboy routine to New York City, where the movie employs some of the quaint TV personalities of the day. –Robert Horton
